My story began when I was born and raised in Ecuador and later moved to Tampa, FL when I was 17 years old. After completing High School, I joined the military and served for four years in the Marine Corps while attending school and completing my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I went on to complete my graduate studies at the University of South Florida, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling and a Doctorate Degree in Behavioral and Community Sciences.

I also married into a different culture than my own and have learned how to raise my two sons within this multicultural home.

Through the personal experience of moving from a country with a different culture and language, entering the military, and getting married and raising two sons with two different cultures, I have learned how difficult life transitions can be in our mental and physical health, and how our environment can add stressors that can make transitions more challenging for us.

I've learned how each of us is capable of learning new skills and tools that can help us grow, adapt and consequently reach peace and happiness.

I enjoy working with multicultural couples, whether they’re from different countries, religions, or races. I help individuals from different cultures create healthy relationships filled with trust and understanding.

I have been the past president of the Suncoast Mental Health Counselors Association, and have been featured on radio, TV, newspapers, magazines, and blogs. I've provided counseling and therapy to couples, families, individuals, children, and adolescents from multi-cultural backgrounds for 10 years.

I currently teach at the University of South Florida. I use a cognitive-behavioral approach to treatment in addition to mind-body holistic therapeutic interventions, which have been found empirically effective to treat a variety of mental health diagnoses, behavior problems, and adjustment difficulties.

My training in counseling and specialization in marriage and family therapy allows me to assess the complexity of problems and help find solutions from different perspectives.
