Feeling Sad or Depressed?

Sadness is a normal emotion that we all experience from time to time.  Difficult or painful situations in life can contribute to prolonged sadness that can even lead to depression.  Depression is a condition characterized by feeling hopelessness and helplessness, changes in appetite, changes in sleep patterns, loss of interest in daily activities, loss of energy, self-loathing, and difficulty concentrating.  It’s important that depression is treated, since left untreated can lead to suicidal ideations and attempts. Research has shown that depression is treatable with psychotherapy and prescription medications.

An important component of treatment is staying active.  Activity can contribute to a decrease in sad feelings and even depression.  The following are some examples of activities that can be useful in an effort to help you cope with sadness and/or depression:

  • Exercise
  • Play a sport
  • Engage in your favorite hobby
  • Spend time with friends or family
  • Dress up, just because
  • Learn something new
  • Go to the park
  • Eat your favorite meal
  • Read a new book
  • Volunteer
  • Watch a funny movie
  • Listen to cheerful music

Remember, these are only general suggestions to cope with sadness or depression.  If you believe that you are struggling with depression, it’s important that you seek the help of a professional.
